Why Los Blancos Have 'Complete Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a key European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a quarter-final berth.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in pre-season.
Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," said the player after his first appearance.
"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.
"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is extremely energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand people are surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.
He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to represent either country at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a decision soon."
His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club chase trophies to come.
After his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the field," he said following the success at Manchester.
