US Military Conducts Lethal Strike in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in Four Deaths
As stated by a senior military official, the American armed forces carried out a fatal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Surveillance verified the vessel was traveling along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male drug traffickers were killed, and no US military forces were injured.”
Background and Recent Actions
This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, vowing to increase the military presence.
Only on the previous day, the Pentagon stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Justifies Actions Amid Scrutiny
The administration has faced growing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, saying it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of lawful warfare.
While the administration has stated the operation is about stopping drugs destined for the US, comments from a senior aide seemed to suggest a wider political objective. In a recent interview, the chief of staff remarked the president “wants to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be part of a strategy to oust Venezuela's current government.
