Two Victims Named in the Providence Campus Incident as Authorities Persist in Hunt for Killer.

Two students who lost their lives in Saturday’s mass shooting on the university campus were honored at the start of the week – amid a widespread hunt for their killer carried on following the freeing by Rhode Island officials of the only individual detained in connection in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.

She served as second-in-command of Brown’s division of the campus GOP group, the group said. The White House press secretary also posted sympathies on social media, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her family and friends, especially her parents.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The second fatality was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.

His name was officially acknowledged by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a online post.

Details of the Attack

Nine other people were injured in the weekend shooting in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Authorities said late Sunday that a 24-year-man detained in a raid at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was released from custody.

“A perpetrator remains free,” declared Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you have to regroup and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”

Public Fear

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate renewed concern for our community”.

The assailant began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm pistol, a police source informed the Associated Press.

Officers that raided the lodging found two handguns and two ammunition clips when the suspect was arrested, according to reports.

Those Hurt

Among those wounded, one pupil was allowed to go home, said the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in grave but unchanging health, and one was in critical condition, officials reported on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a independent school in Durham, North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

Further Tributes

Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only here growing up... but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she worked for her branch and fellow classmates,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the student's death in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to his relatives, loved ones, and peers and grieve for of his promising future.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest college with about over seven thousand undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents documented across the United States so far in 2025, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
