Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is exiting the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of emails between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.

Summers remarked in a statement that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, excited about the prospects of the enterprise, and look forward observing their development".

The prominent academic, who formerly presided over Harvard University, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

The recently released emails showed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before his 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the technology organization expressed it accepted his decision to step down.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the insight he offered to the governing body," OpenAI remarked.

Congressional Action

This news comes after the entire Congress of Congress decided on recently to approve a measure that would require the US justice department to disclose its files on the case.

The bill will then proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has said he intends to sign the measure, after changing his view on the matter following pushback from his base.

A collection of financier-linked emails disclosed by the legislative panel last week referenced multiple prominent individuals in the financier's previous network, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The emails revealed that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to introduce the official to prominent world leaders.

After the correspondence were shared with the wider community, the former official expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my misguided judgment to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".

He continued that he wanted "to rebuild trust and fix relationships with the persons most important to me".

Career Background

The professor occupied high-level positions under Democratic administrations; functioning as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under President Obama.

He headed the university from the early 2000s and is still a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public duties previously on this week, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following his statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a progressive policy institute in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, confirmed that he was no longer connected with the group.

The former official became part of the leadership of the technology firm, which makes ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to oust its top executive Sam Altman.
