Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to latest criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's response directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.

During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

Wilson's reaction came after Payton made remarks following Denver's historic 33-32 win over the Giants. Payton remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Background of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • Wilson was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M contract.
  • The team went 4-11 in his debut year before the team brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
  • Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the contentious split between the quarterback and his mentor.
