Our team is verifying video footage and photographs circulated this morning that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site of where the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
